Marc Ernest Biala: Philippines' Official Rep to the 2011 Mr. Gay World in Manila

Due to recent turn of events, the Mr. Gay World Philippines (MGWP) organization has reached a decision that Sherwin Limon Abuel is ‘officially’ relieved from his duties and responsibilities as the country's representative to the upcoming worldwide search for gay male ambassador on January 24, 2011. Prior to pursuing this move, there have been considerable areas that were looked into and Mr. Abuel failed to meet certain guidelines set by the organization. The organization's decision is final and irrevocable. Taking over Abuel's title is the 24-year-old first-runner-up, Marc Ernest Biala.

MGWP organization was compelled to take the necessary actions toward Mr. Abuel’s ‘uncalled for’ behavior. Abuel repetitively threatened the organizer that he would be backing out from the competition, which in any way placed the entire team behind the contest in a bad light. He also misrepresented the pageant’s ideals and visions that made Abuel’s dethronement possible. The confidence and trust that was given to him was gone and the organization felt he would no longer be fit to represent the country as an ambassador of goodwill that aims to make a good example and impact to the rest of the gay men in the world.

The five feet eight inches tall, registered nurse, Biala takes on the title and competes with other gay men representatives on March 13 at Club Mwah, one of the most outstanding theater-clubs in Asia located in the Tiger City of Mandaluyong and to be hosted by Philippine King of Talk Boy Abunda along with one of the country’s top models Wilma Doesnt and 2005 Miss International Precious Lara Quigaman.

Macoy, to most of his friends, graduated magna cum laude of his class in St. Mary’s College in Tagum City, Davao del Norte. He is currently finishing his Masters of Science in Nursing with his thesis focused on the family caregivers of mentally-ill and is aiming for his second magna cum laude award. He also authored a nursing reference book titled ‘Psychiatric Nursing’ which is already distributed nationwide. Given all the credentials Biala has under his belt, MGWP is confident that he is the ideal country’s bet to the said tilt, which will commence on March 9th and will end on the 14th. Candidates from different countries will be presented on March 10 at Bed Malate and will be busy with bar tours and an outreach program.

This monumental event predicts the boom for the Philippines’ tourism industry as it attracts more foreign visitors to explore the beautiful spots and rich culture, the country has to offer.

Best grooming products for guys

The Esquire Men's Grooming Awards

For the fifth year in a row, I tested every new soap, shampoo, and sloughing agent I could get my hands on. It took two months, but I finally settled on my favorites.- RUDNEY CUTLER, ESQUIRE.COM
Soap
Dove Men's Soap

Soap

Although the scent is a little strong, the moisturizing effects of Dove Men + Care Extra Fresh body-and-face bar ($3 for two bars; cvs.com) more than made up for it. Not that I really care about soft skin. But my wife does.

More from Esquire.com:
Deodorant
Malin + Goetz
Eucalyptus Deodorant

Deodorant

As an Aussie, I rather like the idea of putting a eucalyptus leaf under my arm — and with Malin + Goetz eucalyptus deodorant ($18; malinandgoetz.com), that's exactly what it feels (and smells) like you're doing. It's a strong, fresh scent that you'll want people to notice.

Shampoo
American Crew
Recovery Shampoo

Shampoo

Along with dirt, the harsh detergents in cheap shampoos remove something else from your hair: every last bit of moisture. American Crew's new Trichology Hair Recovery shampoo (Starting at $9; shopping.yahoo.com) cleans well, leaves in that moisture, and even claims to nourish and stimulate your hair in a way that could keep it from falling out — which is nice, even if it's not entirely true. If you want to save money, do it on your conditioner. Even inexpensive conditioner can't do any real damage to your hair.

Face Scrub
Gillette Fusion Face Scrub

Face Scrub

You want a scrub with a little grit, something to slough off the layer of dead skin on your face, even out your complexion, and let your moisturizer penetrate deeper. Gillette Fusion ProSeries Thermal face scrub (Starting at $8; shopping.yahoo.com) takes it one further: It's added heat, which softens your beard and opens your pores for a more comfortable shave.

Face Wash
Anthony Logistics Face Wash

Face Wash

The skin on your face is thinner than the skin on much of the rest of your body, especially around your eyes, which means it can dry out easily. Anthony Logistics for Men Action ($25; shopping.yahoo.com) is a light foam — it feels like Reddi-wip for your skin — that cleans well without making your face feel two sizes too small.

Shaving Cream
Kyoku for Men Shave Cream

Shaving Cream

Shaving cream is one thing I don't mind spending a little extra money on, especially something that feels as luxurious as Kyoku for Men Sake Infused shave cream ($34; kyokuformen.com). It's more whip than cream, like the old-fashioned stuff you'd spread on with a brush, so while it's still extremely lubricating, Kyoku washes off much more easily than a gel or a foam.

Aftershave
Aveda Men's Aftershave

Aftershave

Aveda Men Pure-Formance dual-action aftershave ($35; aveda.com) incorporates a slight moisturizer, so it soothes the skin you just scraped the hell out of and adds back some moisture. Plus, it smells a little like licorice.

All in One Men's Product
Nivea for Active 3 Sport

All-in-One

Although it's not going to do a better job than a separate body wash, shampoo, and shaving gel, if you're just going to the gym or for a weekend away, there's nothing more convenient than Nivea for Men Active 3 Sport ($5; drugstore.com). Shame you can't brush your teeth with it, too.

Men's Moisturizer
Lab Series Face Cream

Moisturizer

It's a little pricey, but Lab Series MAX LS Age-Less face cream ($65; labseries.com) was the best moisturizer I tested in terms of absorption. It left my face feeling soft, not slick. And it doesn't have a scent, which is good when it comes to something you're putting directly under your nose. I also liked the utilitarian and affordable Vaseline for Men Extra Strength body and face lotion ($6; walgreens.com). It's light, relatively fast absorbing, and can be used anywhere on your body.

Men's Cologne
Bulgari Man

Cologne

My favorite colognes are subtle and citrusy, making them appropriate for almost any occasion. Bulgari Man ($79 for 3.4 oz; bloomingdales.com) smells like you tried to chop down a pine tree with an ax made of oranges.

Sculpting Paste
Kérastase Capital Force

Sculpting Paste

If you have short hair, a paste will add texture and hold. It can also leave your hair with a shine and a crunch. But not Kérastase Homme Capital Force ($30; kerastase-usa.com), which is easier to emulsify than most and spreads through the hair evenly. For a little more than six bucks, Got2b inPlay sculpting paste (cvs.com) is nearly as good.

Hair Cream for Men
Billy Jealousy Hair Forming Cream

Hair Cream

Billy Jealousy Ruckus hair forming cream ($16; shopping.yahoo.com) acts like a cream and a paste. It gives you some texture and movement but doesn't leave your hair feeling stiff or weighed down and makes this product also perfect for medium length hair.

Markki Stroem in Next To Normal

After gaining national attention in Pilipinas Got Talent, finalist Markki Stroem  will make his professional stage debut as Henry in Atlantis Productions’ highly-anticipated staging of the Pulitzer and Tony Award winning musical Next To Normal which opens on March 11 at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza, Makati.

Markki Stroem will make his professional stage debut as Henry in Next To Normal

The multi-talented Filipino-Norwegian instrumentalist and vocalist is thrilled to be joining the Philippine theater scene in the groundbreaking rock musical that explores how one suburban household deals with crisis. Ben Brantley, in his New York Times review, raved, “Next To Normal does not qualify as your standard feel-good musical. It is something much more: A feel-everything musical.Next To Normal, with music by Tom Kitt and book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey, won three Tony Awards and the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

Next To Normal recently concluded its hit Broadway run and continues to run on tour. The Manila production is the first licensed English language production followed by an Australian production in April. The license is made possible through Music Theatre International.

Director Bobby Garcia, fresh of the critical success of his Manila and Singapore staging of Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music, will be directing Next To Normal and says, “Markki came into audition for Next To Normal and we immediately knew we had found our Henry. He is an honest, truthful young performer with a remarkable singing voice. He is also passionate about theatre, which is a rarity in young performers these days. We are thrilled he will be making his professional stage debut in Next To Normal. He is a welcome addition to the theater scene!

Even if his star is fast rising in mainstream showbiz, Markki has always been in love with musical theater and couldn’t believe he landed the role of Henry. He says, “As an avid rock musical fan, having followed shows such as Spring Awakening and Rent, I am greatly honored to have landed a role in Next To Normal. I remember when my co-manager Ms. Mariolle Alberto told me about the role in the play, and asked me if I wanted to audition for the show. I automatically agreed and auditioned for the part. Landing the role of Henry with such a great cast, including Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo and Jett Pangan, I am ecstatic to start working on the project! The musical is so powerful and controversial in so many ways, it is going to be a challenge for a professional theater rookie. Although this is the case, I enjoy challenges and I am excited to take part in this exciting show!

He says that Henry in Next To Normal was one of his dream roles. Other dream roles in musical theater include Melchior in Spring Awakening, Roger in Rent, Benny in In The Heights, Fiyero in Wicked, Pippin in Pippin, Joseph in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and Chris in Miss Saigon.

But after Next To Normal Markki continues with his fast-rising showbiz career which will include releasing an album later in the year. Markki says of his showbiz dreams, “My dreams in showbiz are to create great relate-able songs, perform my best every time on stage to entertain my audience and to always be passionate about what I am doing.

No doubt with Next To Normal and his numerous showbiz commitments, Markki is well on his way to making his mark in the Philippine Entertainment industry.

For tickets to Next To Normal,  visit Atlantis Productions or call 892-7078 or 840-1187.
